Walmart Brazil Hosts its First Sustainability Summit

More than 800 attendees - including suppliers, non-governmental organizations, government officials, partners and associates – began building the “supply chain of the future” at Walmart Brazil’s first sustainability summit. The June 2009 event culminated with 20 of our top suppliers signed a pact pledging sustainable business practices. These commitments, which earned endorsements from Greenpeace, Ethos Institute and Akatu Institute, including: - Using timber from the Amazon certified as sustainably sourced
- Doing business with Amazonian suppliers that treat workers fairly
- Reducing phosphates in the laundry and kitchen detergents we sell by 70 percent by 2011
- Offering at least one organic product per food category by 2012
- Reducing packaging by 5 percent by 2013
Historic partnership announced at summit We also unveiled our partnership with Brazilian Environmental Minister Carlos Minc to launch a reusable shopping bag campaign, “Saco é um Saco,” (“Bags are a Pain.”) This is the first time the ministry has partnered with a private sector company. We’re proud this program will help us meet our company’s goal to reduce plastic bag waste globally by 33 percent by 2013.
