Walmart Uses Clout to Push Environmental Goals

Walmart Stores Inc. is trying to do for the environment what it has done for consumers.

Walmart is notorious for pushing suppliers to drive down prices if they want to display their products on the shelves of the world's largest retailer. With $408 billion in revenue and a net income of $14.3 billion for the fiscal year that ended in January, Walmart is the largest company in the world ranked by revenue.

Now Walmart is using its clout to clean up the environment.

Walmart "has more power than the [Environmental Protection Agency]," said Nelson Lichtenstein, author of "The Retail Revolution: How Walmart Created a Brave New World of Business. All the EPA can do is level some fines, but it can't take the contract away from some firm."

Since 2005, Walmart has been chipping away at its three ambitious environmental goals: to be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy, to create zero waste and to sell products that sustain resources and the environment.
