Louisiana and Texas Wal-Mart Associates Contribute More Than $450,000

Wal-Mart associates in Louisiana and Texas have donated more than $450,000 in checks and supplies to the Red Cross and Salvation Army to support the organizations’ flood-relief efforts.

HOUSTON, Texas - Wal-Mart associates in Louisiana and Texas have donated more than $450,000 in checks and supplies to the Red Cross and Salvation Army to support the organizations’ flood-relief efforts.

Donations in Louisiana have been made to numerous Red Cross chapters. The Lafourche/Assumption Parish was given a $10,000 check on behalf of all Wal-Mart stores in the Thibodaux area. The Acadiana Chapter, South East Louisiana Chapter and the Louisiana Capital Area Chapter each received $5,000 checks on behalf of the stores and distribution centers in Opelousas, Lafayette, Slidell, Baton Rouge and Hammond.

In Texas, donations were made to the Greater Houston Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. The Red Cross received a $25,000 check from associates of the Webster, Texas, Wal-Mart store on behalf of all Wal-Mart stores and distribution centers in the Houston area, and a $25,000 check from the SAM’S CLUB located on Fuqua St. on behalf of all SAM’S CLUBS in the Houston area.

In addition, Wal-Mart and SAM’S CLUB associates from the company’s Texas reclamation center donated cleaning supplies, household products, diapers and other consumables to the Red Cross and the Salvation Army in Houston. Wal-Mart also offered the use of an unoccupied distribution center to be used by the Salvation Army as a staging warehouse, thus totaling $150,000 in contributions to the Red Cross and Salvation Army in Houston.

Wal-Mart also has contributed more than $280,000 to Wal-Mart and SAM’S CLUB associates and their families in Louisiana and Texas who were directly affected by the flooding.

Said Lt. Col. Tom Jones, national community relations and development secretary of the Salvation Army, "We greatly appreciate the genuine concern and generosity Wal-Mart has extended to the community during this devastating time. The extraordinary contributions they have made will enable us to reach out even more to help those in need."

Wal-Mart Store, Inc. operates more than 90 Wal-Mart stores, Supercenters and SAM’S CLUBS in Louisiana and employs more than 30,000 associates in the state. In Texas Wal-Mart operates nearly 330 stores and clubs and employs about 104,000 associates in the state. Last year, the company’s associates in Louisiana donated more than $5 million to community organizations while in Texas donations reached more than $17.9 million.
