New Walmart Offers Lincoln Residents Jobs, Holiday SavingsSupercenter marks grand-opening celebration with $15,000 in grants LINCOLN, Neb., Oct. 23, 2008 – Just in time for the holiday shopping season, the area’s newest Walmart Supercenter will open its doors, bringing career opportunities, support for local organizations and savings to customers in northeast Lincoln. The new store, located at 3400 N. 85th St., opens Wednesday, Oct. 29 following a 7:30 a.m. ceremony. As part of Walmart’s commitment to the communities in which it operates, the new store will present $15,000 in grants from the Walmart Foundation to the Food Bank of Lincoln, People’s City Mission, Heartland Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Center for People in Need. “As mayor of Lincoln, I want to thank Walmart for its continuing investment in our community. By awarding community grants to outstanding local organizations, Walmart is making a difference in the lives of many and making this a better community for all residents,” said Mayor Chris Beutler. The new store plans to employ approximately 400 associates. “Walmart offers its associates the opportunity for career advancement, and we are proud to have a positive impact on the community,” Store Manager Jolene Bartling said. “Many associates like me begin their careers as an hourly associate and advance to management. I started as a clerk in the craft department in the Kearney Walmart.” “We believe our customers will be looking to stretch their dollars more than ever this holiday season,” said Bartling. “We offer affordable and convenient solutions to help our customers meet their Christmas shopping needs.” The new 161,274-square-foot store offers customers a variety of products and services, including a full line of groceries. Customers will find custom cakes in the bakery, an array of side dishes to complement the freshly prepared meals in the delicatessen, a frozen food section, meat department and dairy foods. The Tree of Life section provides an assortment of organic products. Customers will also find familiar brands from Nebraska suppliers. “The two-lane pharmacy drive-through is the first Walmart pharmacy drive-through in Lincoln,” said Bartling. “It will make picking up prescriptions even easier for our customers.” New Store Built with Environmentally-friendly Features As part of the relocation, Walmart added energy-efficient technology and environmentally-friendly features to reduce energy and water consumption and minimize waste in the store. The non-sales areas of the store have LED lights and sensors that automatically shut off the lights when those areas are unoccupied. LED lighting throughout the store operates 70 percent more efficiently than traditional fluorescent lighting. Water flow is regulated in the store’s bathrooms through the use of sensor-activated faucets in the sinks and high-efficiency toilets and urinals that regulate water flow and reduce consumption. Waste heat from the refrigeration system is used to heat hot water for restrooms and kitchen areas. The store recycles everything from motor oil to waste cooking oil. The recycling program features a sandwich bale process that takes all loose plastic, hangers, aluminum cans and office paper, sandwiches them between cardboard, bundles them into bales and sends them to recycling centers. The photo department also uses green technology, operating completely without liquid chemicals for photo processing. Grand-Opening Celebration About Walmart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) EDITOR’S NOTES
