New Las Vegas Supercenter Helps Shoppers Save More at Christmas

Store brings economic boost and 300 jobs to community

LAS VEGAS, Nov. 5, 2008 – The newest Las Vegas Walmart Supercenter is opening just in time to help residents save money on all their Christmas merchandise and holiday trimmings. The 120,000 square-foot Supercenter at 3075 East Tropicana opens Thursday, Nov. 12 following a 7:30 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony. The new store will employ approximately 300 associates and is expected to have a positive economic impact on the local economy.

“The Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce is pleased to welcome this new Walmart store to our community,” said Kara Kelley, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce. “This new facility will create valuable jobs, attract customers to the East Tropicana neighborhood and help bolster our economy.”

Supercenter to Make Holiday Shopping a Breeze
The new Supercenter will help customers get a jump on their holiday shopping while saving money. The store will feature a Christmas Shop where customers can meet all their holiday needs at affordable prices. Budget-conscious shoppers can find Christmas trees, ornaments, wrapping paper, lights and outside decor.

“We believe our customers will be looking to stretch their dollars more than ever this holiday season,” said Store Manager Damien Cuff. “Our store will provide affordable and convenient solutions to help customers meet their Christmas shopping needs. We look forward to offering unbeatable prices throughout the Christmas shopping season.”

Store Offers Value and Convenience
Walmart designed the Supercenter as a convenient one-stop family shopping destination with a full line of groceries, more than 30 merchandise departments and a variety of time-saving services. The store’s wide aisles, easy-to-read signs and low-profile displays will enhance the shopping experience for customers.

The complete grocery department is stocked with essentials for everyday meals, game-day celebrations and holiday parties. A bakery and deli offer freshly prepared hot and cold foods, pastries and custom cakes, including the popular ice cream cakes. A variety of organic items also are available.

General merchandise departments include apparel, accessories and fine jewelry, health and beauty aids, and a full line of electronics showcasing the latest in computers, digital media players and high-definition televisions. The store also includes a full-service pharmacy with hundreds of $4 prescriptions available.

With transportation limited for some of its customers, the store is conveniently located within walking distance of many residences and is on the Senior Center’s bus route. The store is also compact, making it easy to shop. “Customers can shop the smaller store without having to walk far, but still meet all their needs,” Cuff said.

Since the Supercenter is easily accessible to tourists visiting The Strip, it prominently displays a wide selection of Las Vegas souvenirs at the front of the store. From picture frames to T-shirts, all souvenirs are available at Walmart’s economical prices, Cuff added.

Local Grants Presented to Community Organizations
To celebrate its opening, the new Supercenter will donate $16,000 in grants from the Walmart Foundation to local organizations, including a $5,000 grant to Jude 22, a nonprofit organization that provides senior citizens with groceries and other necessities.

“Many seniors in our community are alone during the holidays. This donation will help feed a lot of the people in need in our community,” said Hattie Soil, Jude 22 operations manager. The Walmart grant will be used for the organization’s annual Christmas party for the elderly, most of whom have no family nearby.

“This is the only Christmas party many of our clients will attend,” Soil said. “The Walmart grant will help provide more than 120 seniors with a holiday celebration.”

Commitment to the Environment
The Supercenter was designed to reduce energy and water consumption and minimize waste. “Walmart is setting the bar for energy efficiency in retail,” said Cuff. “Simple changes can make a big difference. The store’s 130 skylights, for example, harvest daylight and reduce the amount of energy required to light the store by up to 75 percent daily.”

LED lighting throughout the store operates 70 percent more efficiently that traditional fluorescent lighting.

Water flow is regulated in the store’s bathrooms through the use of sensor-activated faucets in the sinks and high-efficiency toilets and urinals that regulate water flow and reduce consumption. Waste heat from the refrigeration system is used to heat hot water for restrooms and kitchen areas.

The store also recycles everything from motor oil to waste cooking oil. The recycling program features a sandwich bale process that takes all loose plastic, hangers, aluminum cans and office paper and sandwiches them between cardboard, bundles them into bales and sends them to recycling centers.

Part of the cement used in the store’s concrete flooring is made with recycled materials, and the baseboards are manufactured from 100 percent recycled plastic. The photo department also uses green technology, operating completely without liquid chemicals for photo processing.

Grand-Opening Activities
To celebrate the new store opening, residents are invited to the 7:30 a.m. grand-opening activities, which will include an invocation by Walmart co-manager Doran Chesley and presentation of colors by the Chaparral High School ROTC. The Del Sol High School band and drum line will join vocalist Ronald Johnson in leading the national anthem. Some of the grants will be presented to representatives of local organizations at the event. Other activities planned during the celebration include games, a local fire department’s firehouse for kids to tour, and food items available for purchase from Pepsi to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network.
